Watches have bulked up steadily since the “Mad Men” era, incrementally becoming brawnier, thicker and wide enough across to invite comparison to sundials. Particularly over the last decade, high-end watchmakers like Breitling, Franck Muller, IWC, Lange & Söhne, Omega and Panerai and even traditionally conservative companies like Cartier led the way with models offering ample quantities of what the industry refers to as “wrist presence.”

It was an odd development, given that the rest of the culture was headed in the opposite direction, favoring smaller cars, reduced carbon footprints and leaner six-pack bodies over pumped-up bloat and monster guns.

But the Mark McGwire look, otherwise so out of style now, persists in the world of the steroidal sports watch. And that helps account for the fact that timepieces in stores this season seem to have reached epic proportions.

The current record holder is probably the U-Boat U-1942, a monster at 64.4 millimeters in diameter, or about 2.5 inches.But the U-Boat has plenty of company from heavy metal covering a cost spectrum ranging from, say, Invicta’s modestly priced (just over $100) but hulking Invicta Russian Diver Collection Quinotaur Chronograph to the Breitling Super Avenger, a $6,000 (and up) 48-millimeter-wide hunk of metal that would make Dad’s Longines look like a dainty cocktail watch.

Watches have grown as men have adopted “a kind of car collector approach” to buying them, said Tom Kalenderian, general merchandise manager of Barneys New York.

“Guys wanted a fine timekeeping device that not only kept time but said something about status and personal style,” he said.

For men like Steve Baktidy, who owns auto-body repair shops in New York State, a big sports watch is indeed like a sports car. “It gets attention, and it makes a statement,” he said.

Mr. Baktidy started his collection of 35 watches some 15 years ago with a 40-millimeter Rolex Submariner.

Though that watch seemed large at the time (most average sports watches then were 34 to 36 millimeters in diameter), he now favors his Panerai (44 millimeters), Omega Seamaster Railmaster XXL chronometer (49.2 millimeters) or a Glashütte Original that looks like Big Ben on a crocodile strap. “They got bigger and bigger,” Mr. Baktidy said. “What’s the limit? There is no limit.”

There is also, as it happens, no longer much of a gender divide. The vogue for super-size watches is hardly the exclusive province of men, said Carrie Shumway, an associate at a Container Store in Manhattan, shooting her cuff to reveal a wristwatch the size of a saucer. “It’s a boyfriend watch,” Ms. Shumway said. “My boyfriend gave it to me. He’s the fashionista in the family.”

When Lisa Eisner, a writer and publisher in Los Angeles, was still dating her future husband, he surprised her one day by taking her to Tiffany & Company to pick an engagement ring. “I told him I’d rather have a big Rolex Submariner,” Ms. Eisner said. “I love seeing women with big watches. I like big anything.”

According to Edward Faber, the director of the Aaron Faber Gallery, a watch retailer in New York and the author of “American Wristwatches: Five Decades of Style and Design,” it was the sight of more women wearing hefty hardware that triggered a kind of forearms race.

“No man wants to wear a watch smaller than a woman has on,” he said.

The hulking sports watch, the industry’s top seller, is a curious counterpoint to much else in a culture where McMansions are out of favor, fewer gas guzzlers can be seen filling driveways and phones and laptops aspire to near invisibility. In an age when cellphones have largely eliminated the need for a timepiece, the monster wristwatch serves another purpose, as a holdout of permissibly conspicuous consumption.

“It’s still the ultimate look-at-me,” said James Wallman, editor of LS:N Global, a publication of the London trend-watching firm the Future Laboratory.

At Basel 2101, Rolex announced an update to one of its most famous brands, the Yachtmaster.

The Rolex Yachtmaster II, in a mixture of steel and Everrose gold, is an elegant upgrade to another watch design classic, and if you like chunky watches, is now the biggest Rolex the company makes, sporting a 44mm case.

It also features a timer for regattas, a chronometer function that allows you to countdown as you get into position for the start of the race. All you need now is a matching yacht.

The Endurer Chronosprint All Blacks Special Edition was unveiled at the 2012 Baselworld fair. In an unlikely collaboration with the New Zealand rugby team, the Italian jewellery house has endowed the dial of the watch – coated with diamond-like carbon (DLC), with a Maori tattoo design, while the case back is engraved with the team’s leaf logo.

Orient Watches has been producing mechanical watches in Japan for more than 60 years.
It is currently owned by Seiko but retains its own identity. The Orient Mako is designed as a sporty diver’s watch but may be appropriate for any occasion.
This watch has a two-level crown which adjusts both the time and the date. The 1st level corresponds to the time while the 2nd level corresponds to the date. To adjust either level, you must first loosen the screw-down crown. The purpose of a screw-down crown is so that water does not enter the case.

For a quick frame of reference to millimeters, a US quarter is 24.26mm in diameter.

Additionally, if you are buying a watch for yourself, it is advisable to draw out the size of a watch on a piece of paper to quickly size it to your wrist.

If the watch measurements are specified in millimeters, and your ruler does not have millimeters, you can simply convert the millimeters to inches. You will need to multiply the millimeters of the watch diameter by .03937 to find the size in inches (For example 40mm X .03937 = 1.57 inches).

For example, if a watch is 20mm wide, just do 20 x .3937=.7874. You can round that off to .8 and draw a circle with a diameter of a little more than 3/4 of an inch. Or, if you’d rather work in cm, you can convert mm to cm by multiplying the millimeters by 0.1. So 20mm will equal to 2 centimeters.

Buying a watch Online

If your wrist is larger than most, you should contact the company before purchasing and ask them to measure the bracelet for you to make sure it will fit. If it is too small, and you really like the watch, you can contact the manufacturer to find out if you can order additional links.

Midsize watches: A midsize watch is a watch that is smaller than a regular men’s watch and larger than a regular women’s watch. Women who like their watches to be a bit bigger than normal can opt for this size. From our experience, most men find midsize watches to be too small. However, if a man is of a particularly small build, he may prefer this size.

Bracelets: if you purchase a watch with a metal bracelet, there is a good chance you will have to have one or more links removed to fit your wrist properly. This is best done when the wearer is present so that the watchmaker can see the shape of your wrist to determine which links to remove. Sometimes it is better to remove a link from the right side of the watch, other times they will opt to remove it from the left side, depending on the size of your wrist and how the watch fits. You may also need to remove only a half link, as opposed to a full link. That is why most companies do not size the watches for you.

Watch Cases:

Here are some general guidelines of watch sizes to help you narrow down your options. Keep in mind that sizing depends on the style and manufacturer. Some tend to make very petite watches, while others make larger models. All measurements are approximate and are measured by the width of the case.

Women’s Mini: 23mm-25mm.
Women’s Regular: 26mm-29mm
Midsize: 34mm-36mm.
Men’s: 37mm-39mm
Men’s sport: 40mm-42mm.
Mens XL: 45mm

Thing to remember:

Different metals have varying weights and feel different on one’s wrist.

Titanium is generally the lightest material, followed by steel and then white and yellow gold. Platinum is the heaviest.

Where overall weight is a consideration, remember that adding a bracelet, instead of a strap, adds signficant weight.

Larger timepieces and those with rotating bezels are generally considered a more casual or sporty look. Keep size in mind if you plan to wear your timepiece with dress shirts with moderate sized cuffs.

As a guideline for watch thickness, thin 4-6mm, average 6-12mm, full size 12-14mm, making a statement 14-18mm (see sizes below).

Bulova begins manufacturing and selling boudoir and table clocks as well as fine pocket watches. These pieces are sold in unprecedented numbers.

During World War I, the convenience of wristwatches (as opposed to pocket watches) is discovered. In 1919 Bulova introduces the first full line of men’s jeweled wristwatches.

1920
Bulova Watch Company, Inc. moves to 580 Fifth Avenue and builds the Bulova Observatory on top of the building for the taking of sidereal time. This is the first Observatory ever built atop a skyscraper. The Observatory is under the direction of a mathematician whose readings are electrically recorded, instantaneously, on a chronograph hundreds of feet below the observatory, guiding the Bulova watchmakers in the Setting and Timing unit of the Company.

1923
The name Bulova Watch Company, Inc. is adopted. Bulova perfects a new concept in the watch industry with total standardization of parts. Every part of a Bulova watch is made with such precision (standardized to the ten thousandth part of an inch) that it is interchangeable with the same part in any other Bulova watch. This revolutionizes the servicing of watches.

1924
Bulova unveils the first full line of ladies’ watches, including diamond-accented pieces. In the same year, President Calvin Coolidge presents a Bulova watch to Stanley “Bucky” Harris player-manager of the World Series-winning Washington Senators. Bulova designs a new watch in honor of the occasion and names it the “President“.

1926
Bulova produces the nation’s first radio commercial, “At the tone, it’s 8 P.M., B-U-L-O-V-A, Bulova watch time.”

1927
In honor of Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic solo flight from New York to Paris, Bulova ships 5,000 Lone Eagle watches, packaged with pictures of Lindbergh. The supply, which is available the day after the landing, is sold out within three days. During the next few years Bulova sells nearly 50,000 of these commemorative watches. Also in 1927, Bulova Watch Company goes public on the American Stock Exchange, and Bulova Canada is established.

1928
Bulova introduces the world’s first clock radio.

1929
Bulova engineers and patents a new principle in the construction of automobile clocks.

1931 
Bulova begins manufacturing the first electric clocks. The collection includes wall and mantel clocks, and clocks for use in stores, windows, office buildings, train stations and airports. Also, Bulova becomes the first watch manufacturer to spend more than $1 million a year on advertising. Throughout the Depression years, Bulova supports retailers by offering Bulova watches to buyers on time-payment plans.

1932
Bulova runs a “Name the Watch” contest for its new $24.75 timepiece, with cash prizes totaling $10,000. The top prize of $1,000 would be equivalent to about $12,500 in the year 2000.

1940
Bulova is a sponsor for all of the top 20 radio shows, including Charley McCarthy, Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly and Major Bowes Amateur Hour.

Omar N. Bradley becomes chairman of the Bulova Watch Company, a position he remains in until 1973, when he retires at the age of 80.

Accutron Movement

1960
NASA asks Bulova to incorporate Accutron into its computers for the space program. Bulova timing mechanisms eventually become an integral part of 46 missions of the U.S. Space Program. Also in 1960, Bulova reintroduces its redeveloped Phototimer clock for track and field, improved with updated photographic and electronic technologies. It features an infrared sensing element patterned after those used on heat-seeking missiles. Mounted on the starter’s pistol, the Phototimer senses the flash of the gun and starts a timer clock at the same instant that the runners leave their marks.

October 25, 1960
Accutron, the first watch to keep time through electronics, is introduced. It is the most spectacular breakthrough in timekeeping since the invention of the wristwatch. This revolutionary timekeeping concept of a watch without springs or escapement is operated by an electronically activated tuning fork. The Accutron watch goes on to become a presidential gift to world leaders and other dignitaries. President Johnson declares it the White House’s official Gift of State.

1962
The Accutron Tuning-fork watch becomes the first wristwatch certified for use by railroad personnel. 1962 is also the year that Bulova introduces its Caravelle line of jeweled watches. Designed to retail at $10.95 to $29.95, Caravelle competes with non-jeweled watches in the same price range.

1966
Bulova runs national commercials for Accutron on many popular television shows including the Dean Martin Show and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Accutron clocks are the only clocks aboard Air Force One.

The Bulova Satellite Clock, the world’s first public clock regulated by time signals from orbiting satellites, is inaugurated by Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, President of Mexico. An Accutron watch movement is part of the equipment placed on the moon by Apollo 11 astronauts, the first men on the moon. A Bulova timer is placed in the moon’s Sea of Tranquility to control the transmissions of vital data through the years.

Bulova introduces the Accuquartz, the first quartz-based clock.

1970
The Bulova Accuquartz men’s calendar wristwatch becomes the first quartz-crystal watch sold at retail in the United States. Made of 18-karat gold, it retails for $1,325.

1973
Three specially designed Accutron portable alarm clocks are placed on board NASA’s Skylab, the world’s first space laboratory, launched from Cape Kennedy. Also this year, Bulova wins the world’s first design competition for solid-state digital watches at the Prix de la Ville de Genève watch-styling competition, the world’s most prestigious international watch-styling competition. Bulova also wins two of the three honorable mentions awarded at the competition.

Bulova introduces its line of Accutron Quartz movement watches for men. Also this year, the Smithsonian Institution’s newly opened National Air and Space Museum features a replica of the NASA Skylab. Bulova changes its corporate name from Bulova Watch Company, Inc. to Bulova Corporation. This move reflects the companies growth into new and different product markets. Bulova produces an ad in record time. At the Winter Olympics in Calgary, a photograph is snapped on Saturday morning. Eight hours later an ad incorporating the photo is on the press in time to be in millions of copies of Time magazine on Monday.

This year, with its new line of Swiss quartz watches, Accutron is relaunched as the premier brand of the Bulova Corporation.

Bulova enters into a distribution agreement in South America and extends licenses in the Far East and Europe.

A Gallup survey and the Fairchild 100 report rank Bulova fourth in consumer awareness in the combined watch and jewelry industries.

Bulova introduces the Millennia Collection, a group of watches featuring innovative technology or materials. The collection includes a solar group, watches powered by light; motion quartz, watches powered by the motion of the wearer’s arm; and vibra-alarm, watches featuring two alarm mode options: sound or vibration.

Bulova adds World Timer and Perpetual Calendar watches to the Millennia Collection.

On October 4, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani proclaims Bulova Day in New York City, in recognition of Bulova’s 125th anniversary.

2001
Bulova acquires the Wittnauer trademark and some of the assets of Wittnauer International. Bulova also acquires the license for Harley-Davidson watches. Also, in 2001, Women’s Wear Daily’s Luxury Survey, which measures American women’s perception of the most luxurious apparel and accessory brands, ranked Bulova #14 in the watch and jewelry category.

2002
Bulova acquires certain assets of Heirloom, a custom woodworking company specializing in the manufacture of grandfather clocks. Operating as a Bulova subsidiary under the new name, Art of Time, Ltd., the Kitchener, Ontario-based facility begins producing high-quality, custom-made Bulova grandfather clocks for sale in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Bulova also launches a comprehensive international operating strategy to enhance its global positioning while protecting the integrity of the Bulova name by reasserting control over development and marketing worldwide. A key component of the program is the opening of European headquarters in Fribourg, Switzerland, marking Bulova’s return to full proprietary operations in Europe after nearly a quarter of a century. Made in Switzerland, with product development at both Bulova Swiss, S.A. and Bulova’s home office in New York, the Bulova European Collection is set to begin distribution on January 1, 2003.

2008

1 Bulova Avenue

On January 10, 2008, Citizen bought the Bulova Watch Company for $250 million. Together they are the world’s largest watchmaker. After the acquisition Dennis W. Perry was named the president of Bulova.

Currently Bulova designs, manufactures, and markets several different brands, including: the signature “Bulova”, the affordable “Caravelle”, the dressy/formal Swiss-made “Wittnauer Swiss”, the very popular “Marine Star”, and the sportier Swiss-made “Accutron”.

In 2010 Bulova introduced the Precisionist, a new type of quartz watch which is claimed to be accurate to 10 seconds a year and has a sweeping second hand rather than one that jumps each second.

Shortly thereafter, the company carved out a significant niche for itself, one that remains theirs alone to this day, with a classic model that quickly became an international best-seller: the $20 Liberty Eagle watch, which is made from a genuine U.S. $20 gold piece. In the Corum workshops, genuine mint-state Liberty eagle ($10) and double eagle ($20) coins are carefully cut in half, and in between the obverse and reverse of the coin, a high-quality movement is carefully inserted. Although other companies had made this style of watch since the 1920′s, it was always as dress pocket watches. Corum’s breakthrough was making it as a wristwatch.

It would be a bit misleading, however, to say that such a procedure can be accomplished like clockwork, for in reality, completing a Corum gold coin watch requires numerous steps and many painstaking hours of meticulous hand-finishing. In fact, machining the inside of the case, so that a movement can be fitted, can in and of itself take several hours of patient work.

Today, Corum can be justly proud of the fact that it has one of the richest collections in its field. Corum watches are immediately recognizable as such, and although a few of the movements are based on ebauches, these ebauches are often reworked by Corum’s in-house watchmakers. A vast range of original designs, which with their infinite variety, define the Corum style – always in the forefront of time. From the “Golden Bridge” to the “Limelight”, “Coin Watch“, “Romulus” and “Admiral’s Cup“, Corum’s products reveal a progressive attitude that is quite rare in today’s watchmaking world. Rather than merely resting on its laurels, hoping to maintain the value of its tradition, at the cost of new ideas, Corum continually debuts new designs. Their attitude might best be summed up as follows: “To create is to construct, and to construct is to live“.

This motto has become the keynote of Corum’s policy. True creation cannot be compared to merely re-inventing old models that have proved reliable in the past. Time moves on, each second thrusts us onwards into the future, and it is a mistake to claim to have mastered time without having the courage to move forward constantly…to offer the wearer a watch that reflects his or her own vitality.

To mark its 40th anniversary Corum commissioned a new design center which is interesting for a number of reasons: it is tangible evidence of the company’s policy of continuous innovation and it is the product of an architectural competition. The idea of this competition is once again a reflection of the pioneering spirit that was important to the company’s founders in the early days.

Guided by its own enthusiasm, this young company has made great efforts to establish a reputation to match it ambition. The results speak for themselves: a very effective publicity campaign and successful sponsorship program demonstrate Corum’s desire to be at the helm and not in the wake.

Since December of 1998, Corum has been jointly owned by the Bannwart family and the Al Fardan Group in Doha, Qatar.

Following several months of negotiations, American businessman Severin Wunderman, a well-known figure in the watch industry, has personally acquired a majority interest in the company rather than through his company, Severin Montres, Ltd., “Because I want to be personally involved with the firm. I intend to maintain the current personnel in their positions, from management to production, and to capitalize on the rich traditions that have made the reputation of Corum throughout the world”, he stated.

In the meantime, the master watchmakers at La-Chaux-de-Fonds continue to produce the magnificent timepieces – including such masterpieces as the Minute Repeater and Minute Repeater/Tourbillon – for which they are rightly famous. A: Usually this just means you need a new battery. Try replacing it. If that doesn’t work, send it in for service.

Q: Why is an anniversary clock called an anniversary clock and a carriage clock called a carriage clock?
A: When anniversary clocks were first made, they needed to be wound only once a year, on the clock’s “anniversary.” A carriage clock is called a carriage clock because the original purpose of the handle on its top was so that it could be carried from room to room.

Q: What are the differences between your watch brands?
A: Bulova is our signature brand. It is mid-priced ($135 – $550) and has the most classic styling. Bulova also has a collection of 14-karat gold watches ($495 – $3,495). Accutron is our premiere brand. It is the most expensive ($295 – $1,095) and has the highest quality parts and movements. All Accutron watches are Swiss made. The Accutron brand is organized in collections; the watches in one collection all have similar styling and features. Caravelle is our lower-priced line ($45 – $125.) It is the most fashion-forward. Caravelle watches have the most contemporary styling.

Q: I’ve heard there are some watches that don’t need batteries. Is that true?
A: Yes, it is. Most modern watches are quartz watches, which are battery operated. The non-battery watches you’ve heard of are either mechanical, automatic or solar. Mechanical watches are better known as “windup” watches. They are older and sometimes referred to as “jewel” watches. Automatic watches are powered by motion. The motion of daily wear causes an oscillator in the movement of the watch to vibrate and generate the energy that powers the watch. The easiest way to tell a quartz watch from a traditional automatic watch is that the second hand of a quartz watch “ticks” while the second hand of an automatic appears to “glide” around the dial. Bulova makes a type of automatic watch called Motion Quartz. A solar watch uses energy provided by light.

Q: Does Bulova make any automatic watches?
A: Bulova’s Motion Quartz watches are much like automatic watches. These watches are slightly different from the traditional automatic watch in that they contain a capacitor that stores and releases energy much like a battery. Traditional automatic watches need to be worn on a regular daily basis to keep them running accurately. Bulova’s Motion Quartz watches do not need to be worn every day. The capacitor can store and release energy for up to two months, keeping accurate time.

Q: I have an older Bulova watch. How can I tell what year it was made and if it’s worth anything?
A: Starting in 1948 Bulova began marking the back of watch cases with the year of the watch. To determine the age of a watch made prior to 1948, you would need to send it to Bulova service, as the only year indication for these watches is inside the casing. For watches from 1948 and 1949 the actual year is printed. After that, a letter denoting the decade followed by the digit of the year is marked. This practice began in the ’50s, with the letter L. M signified the ’60s, N the ’70s, P the ’80s, T the ’90s and A the ’00s (2000). So, for example, if P9 is on the case back, the watch was manufactured in 1989. The only way to know the value of a watch, unfortunately, is to have it appraised by a professional jewelry appraiser.

Q: The bracelet on my watch is too small. Can links be added?
A: Yes. You can arrange to get extra links through the jeweler where you bought the watch, or you can go through the Bulova Bracelet Department. Bulova will supply two extra links at no cost on the new purchased watches(except bracelets that are made of karat gold, for which all extra links must be purchased.) Any additional links (beyond the first two) must be purchased. Send your request, with the watch so the links can be attached, to:

Q: How do I shorten my watch bracelet (remove links)?
A: The removal of links from a watch is a professional procedure normally done at time of sale. If you purchased your watch through the mail or Internet, it is unlikely that your watch bracelet has been adjusted. This procedure is not recommended for the consumer.

You have two options:

1. If You send the watch to Bulova’s Service Department, with an indication of the correct size (length) and/or the number of links to be removed, your new watch bracelet will be adjusted at no charge.
2. You also have the option of bringing the watch to a qualified jeweler to have it adjusted. Jewelers, however, will probably charge for this service, since the watch was not purchased there.

Q: I saw a Bulova clock/watch in an ad. I would like to buy it. How can I find a store near me that carries it?
A: You can use the Store Locator on this Web site.

Q: Can I buy directly from Bulova?
A: No, you must go through a retailer.

Q: Is Bulova a European company?
A: No. It is an American Company. It was founded in New York City in 1875. Some of our products, however, do come from other countries. For example, all Accutron watches are Swiss made.

Q: How much is my watch worth?
A: The value of an old or used watch is determined on the “open market.” That means, literally, that it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Since Bulova is a wholesale business, we have no connection with this market. If you feel that your watch has significant value other than “sentimental,” it is best to obtain an estimate of value from a professional appraiser in your area.

Q: Can I get information about my old watch?
A: Unfortunately the information that we have on old watches (pre-1960s) is extremely limited. If you mail (see service address) or fax (718-204-3596) a good photocopy of the watch, to the attention of our Case and Bracelet Department, we will do our best to supply you with any information that may be available. Basic information is provided on the case back and dial.

Q: Can I get parts to repair my old watch?
A: The only way to determine if your old Bulova watch is repairable is to send your watch to our service facility where we can positively identify the exact model (see the address above). If the parts are not available we can also determine if a substitute part will fit properly. If the watch is repairable, we will send you an estimate for repair. If it is not repairable, we will return the watch to you with no additional charges. Bulova provides parts to the trade only.

Q: Where can I find a battery for my old tuning fork Accutron watch?
A: The original mercury-based button batteries (cells) for these watches have become obsolete. The sale of mercury cells has been banned by law in some states because of environmental hazards. Major battery manufacturers have discontinued the production of these mercury-based cells.

Silver oxide-based watch cells, the type used in most of today’s quartz watches, are available in sizes which can be used as substitutes for the most popular sizes of Accutron mercury cells.

There are, however, several important points which must be taken into consideration:

A silver oxide-cells is 1.55 volts, compared with a mercury cell’s 1.35 volts. The use of this slightly higher voltage cell will not affect the performance of a correctly adjusted Accutron. If the watch does not operate properly with a 1.55 volt substitute, the fault is either an incorrect adjustment of the movement, or worn parts in the movement.

Using a 1.55V cell will not cause any damage to the movement.

Q: Can I still have my old tuning fork Accutron watch repaired?
A: Although parts for repairing the old Accutrons are no longer available, we do offer the option of replacing the movements on most of these old watches with a modern “Quartz” movement. There is one Accutron men’s model for which the movement cannot be replaced. That model has the setting knob (crown), plus the coin slot battery cover on the back of the watch as on most watches.

Bulova’s service center can clean and adjust any Accutron that does not require parts.

Its appearance implied a small revolution in the world of scuba diving and horology because it was one of the first wrist watches that could operate without problems submerged in water, ensuring resistance below 100 meters deep (330 feet).

It was later strengthened by its patented tripleseal Triplock winding crown, making it capable of withstanding depths of  up to 300 metres (1,000 feet).

In addition, the Submariner was the first one to have a rotating bezel with markers, allowing timing immersion.

Radium paint,  luminescent, radioactive and visible in the dark,  was used for the luminous indices. With time, some dials presented a patina layer, which made the markers of these old clocks seem browned, but originally they were white.

In 1955 the price of a Rolex Submariner varied in each store depending on the offer made by the jeweler, but could be found  for about $ 70 at the time, what would be about $ 550 now, very distant to the exorbitant prices of today.

In 1965-1966, Rolex discontinued use of gilt/silver gilt dials on the Submariner watches, switching to white printing. A final important change came with the introduction of the 1680 model in the late 1960s. The 1680 was the first Submariner to be equipped with a date complication, marking the completion of the transition of the Submariner line from specialist tool watch to mass market fashion accessory. While many professional and military divers used — and continue to use — Submariners in the most demanding underwater environments, by the late 1960s the watch had undeniably become a mass market product as well.

Unidirectional Rotatable Bezel

The Submariner’s rotatable bezel is a key functionality of the watch. The graduations provide the diver with an accurate indication of diving time. For safety reasons, it rotates only counterclockwise, so there is no chance of overestimating dive time or the amount of breathing mix remaining in the tanks. The luminescent capsule ensures legibility, no matter how light-deprived the environment.

James Bond Submariner

In 1962, Sean Connery embodies James Bond  for the first time in the  film “Dr. No”. In his wrist he wore a Rolex Submariner. Fleming himself was a user of this brand.

When and Ian L. Fleming wrote his first James Bond book on 1953, ”Casino Royale”, he explained that his character could not wear just a watch, it had to be a Rolex, and not because of its qualities as a submarine watch,  but because James Bond used it as a brass knuckle, breaking it after stamping the word “Rolex” to one of his enemies face.

In the “Goldfinger” movie, third installment of the Bond saga (1964), there is a close up on the Submariner of  007. This is a 6538 Model, produced between 1955 and 1958. It is easily recognizable by the oversized crown without  protectors. This model already came with the revolutionary mechanism cal.1030 and was water resistant up to 200 meters deep.

The Rolex Submariner appeared in almost all deliveries of the James Bond saga up to “Golden Eye” stared by Pierce Brosnan in 1995, in which the producer firm signed a a contract with Omega to promote the watch  “Seamaster“. This way of advertising is called “implanting” and it consists of making a product appear notoriously in the footage. Rolex never had this type of agreement.
